Why Mirae Asset Consulting is buying Korbit

Mirae Asset Consulting said in its filing that the purchase was intended to secure future growth based on digital assets. Local press linked the deal to the group's 'Mirae Asset 3.0' strategy of combining traditional and virtual-asset businesses.

Deal terms and financing

The buyer is acquiring 26.91m Korbit shares for cash. Korbit's main shareholders were NXC, the holding company of game developer Nexon, and SK group affiliates; SK Planet disclosed the sale of 9.22m shares for ₩45.7bn, citing tag-along rights under a shareholders' agreement.

Regulatory approvals and timing

The Korea Fair Trade Commission approved the acquisition in July 2026, and crypto.news reported on 23 July that Mirae Asset had completed its takeover, with its stake set to rise further to 97.15% after an additional share purchase.

Market context

Korbit, founded in 2013, is one of five won-based crypto exchanges licensed in South Korea but has a small share of trading volume compared with Upbit and Bithumb. Banks and brokers bought into Korean exchanges throughout 2026, including Hana Bank's stake in Upbit operator Dunamu.
