Alberta Investment Management Corporation (AIMCo) said on 14 October that it has joined an Equitix-led investor group, alongside GCM Grosvenor, that has acquired a 50% interest in Viridor Group, the UK's largest energy-from-waste platform, from KKR. KKR keeps the other 50%. The price was not disclosed.
Why Equitix-led investor group (Equitix, AIMCo and GCM Grosvenor) is buying Viridor Group (50% co-control stake, from KKR)
The investors cited Viridor's market-leading position, long-term contracted and inflation-linked cash flows, diversified operating footprint and its development pipeline. AIMCo said it was its first investment in the energy-from-waste sector.
Deal terms and financing
The Equitix-led group holds what Equitix described as a 50% co-control position, with KKR retaining the remaining 50%. Equitix agreed in December 2025 to buy a substantial minority stake in Viridor from KKR-advised funds with a path to 50%; it already owned 35% of Viridor's energy division. The value of the transaction has not been disclosed.
Market context
Viridor operates 12 energy-from-waste facilities across the UK, with two more under construction, and processes more than 3.4 million tonnes of waste and recycling a year. KKR bought Viridor from Pennon Group in 2020 for £4.2bn.
