Why Cohere Inc. is buying Aleph Alpha GmbH

Cohere chief executive Aidan Gomez said organisations worldwide are demanding control over their AI stack. The companies plan a joint venture with Schwarz Group to develop sovereign AI offerings delivered on Schwarz's STACKIT cloud platform.

Deal terms and financing

No price was disclosed. Schwarz Group companies said they intended to lead Cohere's next funding round, a Series E, with €500m of structured financing. On signing the definitive agreement, Aleph Alpha co-CEO Ilhan Scheer was named as Cohere's future chief operating officer and co-founder Samuel Weinbach as chief research officer.

Regulatory approvals and timing

The April plan was subject to shareholder and regulatory approvals. A definitive business combination agreement was signed on 16 September 2026, and the companies expect to close later in 2026 once regulators clear it.

Market context

Both companies were founded in 2019. Cohere's customers include RBC, Salesforce and Oracle, while Aleph Alpha's include Deutsche Bank, Bosch and SAP. Canada and Germany had earlier committed to a Sovereign Technology Alliance.
