Why John Laing Group is buying American Roads

John Laing chief executive Andrew Truscott called the purchase a clear signal of its long-term commitment to US transport infrastructure. The platform complements John Laing's US managed-lanes and P3 projects, such as the I-77 Express Lanes in North Carolina.

Deal terms and financing

John Laing acquires 100% of American Roads. CVC DIF bought the business in 2018 through its DIF Infrastructure V fund and said the sale continued its programme of returning capital to investors.

Regulatory approvals and timing

The transaction is subject to customary regulatory approvals, including US antitrust clearance. ENR reported that no expected closing date was given; no completion had been announced as of October 2026.

Market context

American Roads owns the Tuscaloosa Bypass, Emerald Mountain Expressway and Montgomery Expressway in Alabama and the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel lease, together serving about seven million trips a year. ENR said the deal showed continued institutional demand for mature US toll assets despite higher borrowing costs.
