Axel Springer agreed on 6 March to acquire Telegraph Media Group, publisher of The Daily Telegraph, from RedBird IMI for £575m in cash.
Why Axel Springer SE is buying Telegraph Media Group
Axel Springer said it would back an investment programme to make the Telegraph the leading centre-right media outlet in the English-speaking world, expand it into the United States using the expertise of Politico and Business Insider, and give it access to its digital, AI, advertising, subscription and events capabilities. It said the Telegraph's editorial independence would be preserved.
“More than 20 years ago, we tried to acquire The Telegraph and did not succeed. Now our dream comes true.”
Deal terms and financing
The consideration is £575m in cash. RedBird IMI said Axel Springer offered a strong commercial bid and a straightforward regulatory path to ownership.
Regulatory approvals and timing
Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy said on 14 April she was not minded to intervene and gave written consent for the transfer, according to Press Gazette. With approvals also received in Ireland and Austria, Axel Springer completed the takeover on 30 June 2026, VideoWeek reported.
Market context
Lloyds Banking Group took control of the Telegraph's parent in 2023 over Barclay family debts. A deal led by RedBird and Abu Dhabi-backed IMI was blocked over foreign state ownership concerns, and DMGT later agreed to buy the title before Axel Springer's offer was preferred.
